How Fidens is Helping to End Homelessness in Western Australia

According to the ABS Census 2021, approximately 123,000 people in Australia experience homelessness on any given night. In Western Australia alone, an estimated 9,700 people are affected.

While WA may not have the highest homelessness rates among Australian states, significant efforts are being made to address the issue of "rough sleepers" in the community.

So, how is Fidens contributing to the fight against homelessness in WA?

Ending Homelessness in Western Australia

The Western Australian Alliance to End Homelessness is an independent body of individuals and organizational partners working to end homelessness in communities across WA.

Open to anyone who believes homelessness is solvable, the Alliance works by taking a deep dive into understanding the problem and ending it together. They do this by empowering communities through research, sharing and learning, innovative collaboration and measurable outcomes for people experiencing homelessness.

The Alliance works to end chronic homelessness by delivering on the five strategic challenges of housing, prevention, a strong coordinated approach, data and research and community capacity building.

Our Meeting and Presentation

On the 11th of July, our team had the privilege of joining the Perth Rough Sleepers in their collaborative meeting with End Homelessness WA.

We presented to key figures from major organizations in the homelessness sector, including:

  • Royal Perth Hospital Transitional Housing Manager

  • The Salvation Army

  • Central 55

  • Perth Homeless Shelter

  • Ruah Homeless Services

  • Uniting WA

  • St Barts Transitional Housing Manger

  • Several Aboriginal Homeless Organizations

With our best efforts and open hearts, we positioned ourselves as an additional service to help combat Australia's homelessness epidemic.

So, what do we have to offer these establishments to further their cause?

Our Services

Fidens provides a tailored range of services designed to support those in need. Our options not only offer care for homeless individuals but also promote a life of health and wellness.

Some of these services include:

Supported Independent Living (SIL) This type of support is for individuals with disabilities who require higher levels of assistance. This implies the need for substantial support 24/7.

STA offers temporary support for brief stays outside the home, while MTA assists with temporary living during delays in long-term housing transitions.

This offers services to help individuals with physical disabilities navigate daily life comfortably, in their own home or in shared residences.

Community Participation is about connecting, sharing activities, and choosing experiences that align with personal interests for those with intellectual disabilities.

For more information and to view all services we have to offer, visit Our Services tab.

Accommodation

In addition to our wide range of services, we also provide our clients with homes they can call their own. These homes can be custom-built or modified to meet their specific needs.

All our homes are NDIS certified and comply with NDIS safety regulations, ensuring a secure living environment for our residents.

We're thrilled to introduce our first house in WA, located in Beckenham. This four-bedroom home offers both luxury and safety for its residents.

Some of these luxuries include:

  • Fully furnished home

  • Bedrooms with built-in wardrobes

  • Modern decor

  • Convenient kitchen appliances

  • Outdoor alfresco

Personal Support and Wellbeing

While physical support is essential for daily living, we recognize that life’s challenges go beyond the physical. Coming from a Christian background, we believe that caring for the spirit and heart is equally, if not more, important than caring for the mind and body.

With each client, we take the time to know them personally, not just as a set of disabilities on paper, but as individuals seeking refuge and care.

Our support workers embody our core values of Compassion, Empowerment, Excellence, and Family. We never give up on someone, even if they have given up on themselves. That’s what it means to be compassionate. That’s what it means to be family. That’s what it means to be Fidens.

Conclusion

As we continue our mission to end homelessness in Western Australia, we remain dedicated to providing comprehensive, compassionate care that addresses the unique needs of each individual.

Our participation in the Perth Rough Sleeper Collaborative Meeting reaffirmed our commitment to this cause and highlighted the impact we can make through collaboration with key organizations.

By offering tailored services, secure housing, and holistic support, Fidens is not just a provider but a partner in building a better future for those experiencing homelessness.

Together, we can make a difference in ending homelessness and providing a brighter future for all. Join us in our mission!

I reckon you’ve raised some fair dinkum points in this piece, but I was just wondering what you think the biggest hurdle might be when we try to put these ideas into practice?
